Sumunar Ensembles
Sumunar Gamelan Ensemble
This group is a continuation of what was called the IPAAM Gamelan Ensemble, which
grew out of the Schubert Club Gamelan founded in 1995. Joko Sutrisno continues
as its director and instructor. The ensemble presents several major performances
each year, usually combined with dance and sometimes with shadow puppetry.
The Schubert Club gamelan instrument
set, Kyai Medharing Madu, continues to be used in the IPAAM studio and in some performances.
A privately owned set, Kyai Kumbul, is used frequently in performances.

Sumunar Gamelan Ensemble's latest
recoring, is now available. Recorded on Kyai Rengga Manis Everist, the gamelan
set of the National Music Museum at the University of South Dakota, this release features both
traditional Javanese pieces as well as modern compositions.

Sumunar Dance Ensemble
This group presents the graceful, flowing dances of various Indonesian styles:
classical court dances, dances of folk derivation from various parts of Indonesia, and new
choreographies utilizing traditional movements. The costumes are varied, elaborate,
and colorful. This group usually performs with gamelan accompaniment, but also
appears independently, using recorded accompaniment. Tri Sutrisno is the director
and instructor.
Sumunar Youth Ensemble
The gamelan component of this group has much performance experience and appears
frequently, alone or with the adult Sumunar Gamelan Ensemble. The youth dance group
joins with the gamelan in some performances. These performers are enrolled in the community
classes for youth gamelan and dance instruction. Joko and Tri Sutrisno are the
instructors.
