Joko Sutrisno, Music Director

Joko Sutrisno is Music Director for the Indonesian Performing Arts Association of Minnesota. He served as Music Director for the Schubert Club's gamelan program from 1995-2002. Originally from Solo, Java, he directed the gamelan at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. In addition to leading The Sumunar Gamelan Ensemble in performances, he teaches community classes and school workshops. He also directs a gamelan ensemble at St. Cloud State University. Since 1999, he has served as an adjunct faculty member at Hamline University (Saint Paul, MN).

As a visiting artist, he has represented IPAAM in gamelan performances at the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Hamilton College in Clinton - NY, Radford College in Virginia, the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, and at the 1999 International BEAT festival in New Zealand.

Compositions

Joko has composed works for gamelan and western instruments. Compositions for the gamelan ensemble include:

  • Laksmawati - premiered November 7, 2000 with the Orchestra of St. Catherine and The Schubert club Gamelan Ensemble
  • Music for Gyre, a collaboration with In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre, November-December 1999
  • Koneksi, written for The Schubert Club Gamelan Ensemble and the contemporary ensemble Zeitgeist - premiered May 17, 1998
  • Penataan - premiered May 17, 1997

Special Awards and Grants:

  • Recipient of Artist of the Year 2003 from Young Audiences of Minnesota.
  • Recipient of Minneapolis Award from The City of Minneapolis for outstanding contribution to the community, October 1997
  • Recipient of a Composers Commissioning Program grant from the American Composers Forum to produce a 20-minute work for Zeitgeist Contemporary Ensemble and gamelan, October 1997
  • Outstanding Student Award, National Academy of Performing Arts (ASKI) In Surakarta, Indonesia, 1985
