Indonesian Music and Dance at Sundin Hall

The Schubert Club Gamelan Ensemble and Sumunar Dance Ensemble performed a variety of music and dance, from the dreamy and contemplative music of the classic repertoire to the lively rhythms of the twenty-first century pop styles. Guest performers included dancer Ngurah Kertayudha from the Indonesian consulate in Chicago and singers from the Indonesian Muslim Faith Group of Minnesota. This annual performance was co-sponsored by the Indonesian Performing Arts Assocation of Minnesota (IPAAM) and The Schubert Club.

Taste of Indonesia: Fundraising Dinner and Silent Auction

Guests enjoyed traditional Indonesian food, gamelan music and Indonesian dance. The evening featured a performance of wayang kulit (shadow puppet theater), performed by guest dalang Midiyanto and accompanied by players from the Schubert Club Gamelan Enesemble.
 
Wayang Kulit at Puppet Fest 2005

Joko Sutrisno and the Schubert Club Gamelan Ensemble presented a peformance of wayang kulit (shadow puppet theater) on the opening night of the Puppeteer's of America's annual convention. They were joined by guest artist Sumarsam (Javanese dalang and instructor at Wesleyan Unviversity). IPAAM hosted an open rehearsal the night before the show, to give the public a chance to see a rare performance of Javanese shadow puppet theater in Minnesota.

Annual Como Performance

The Ramayana Project

IPAAM collaborated with local Indian dance company, Katha Dance Theater, and choreographer Rita Mustaphi to present The Ramayana Project: a compilation of seven episodes of the Ramayana, told through the music and dance of several Asian traditions. Musicians and dancers from the Twin Cities, as well as international touring artists, represented cultures of India, Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Indonesia, weaving together scenes from the epic tale of good versus evil, moral dilemmas, romance, heartache and magic.

Several scenes featured Javanese gamelan music performed by Joko Sutrisno and the Schubert Club Gamelan Ensemble, as well as Indonesian dance featuring Javanese dancers Matheus Wasi Bantolo and his wife Olivia Retno Widyastuti.

This performance was presented with support by the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council (MRAC) from an appropriation by the Minnesota Legislature, and an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and the St. Paul Travelers.

This year, the IPAAM Indonesian Dance Ensemble performed again at the biggest multicultural event in the state.

 
Shadow Puppets of Java

The Schubert Club Gamelan Ensemble performed a traditional wayang kulit performance, with special guest puppeteer, Midiyanto. Wayang kulit, or shadow puppet theater, is an ancient form of puppetry and one of Indonesia's most famous traditional performing arts. This performance told the story of Bima (pictured at right) and his quest for the water of life. A version of this story and more about wayang kulit are available on the Northern Illinois University web site.

In addition to special guest Midiyanto (Javanese dalang and instructor at University of California Berkeley), the performance featured musical direction by Joko Sutrisno and a free lecture by Dr. Evan Winet (Macalester College), and was produced by IPAAM and the Schubert Club, with support from St. Olaf College and Hamline University.

Benefit Concert for Tsunami Victims

This benefit was presented by the University of Minnesota School of Music, and included a gamelan performance as well as music from a number of other cultures. The concert was free, collecting donations that were contributed to aid funds for tsunami victims.

 

Interfaith Prayer Service

Members of the Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Christian and Muslim communities participated in this interfaith prayer service, contributing segments of Sacred writings of these traditions, as well as sung and spoken prayers.

 

Sethu (Bridge)

Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
Sethu combined Balinese Kecak, Javanese Gamelan and Indian Bharatanatyam dance to tell the Hindu epic, Ramayana. This performance was a collaboration between Ragamala Music and Dance Theater; Balinese Master Kecak artist, I Dewa Putu Berata; Joko Sutrisno, IPAAM and the Schubert Club Gamelan Ensemble; and the Walker Art Center.
