School Residencies and Performances

Joko Sutrisno and Tri Sutrisno have over nine years of experience conducting residencies in Minnesota elementary schools. In the 2003-04 school year, 10,000 students participated in 15 two-week residencies conducted in schools across Minnesota.

Workshops and residencies are available in Javanese gamelan music, Indonesian dance, and Javanese shadow puppetry. Small ensemble music and dance performances are available for school assemblies and events. Special class and small group workshops in the IPAAM Studio (near the U of M in Minneapolis) can also be arranged.

Please contact IPAAM by email or phone (651-766-9377) to bring the wonder of Indonesian performing arts to your school. You can also arrange programs through Young Audiences of Minnesota.

Specific programs that are available include:

Gamelan Music of Java
(Performance for Grades K-12)
Discover the beauty of the gamelan as you are introduced to the fascinating world of traditional Indonesian music. The orchestra includes tuned bronze gongs and metallophonesÑa perfect way to access non-western musical traditions. A companion workshop is recommended.

Indonesian Dance Workshop
(Workshop for Grades K-12)
Students gain an understanding and appreciation of Indonesian culture and practice teamwork and coordination skills through dances such as Dance of a Thousand Hands, Rabbit Dance and more.

Indonesian Gamelan Music and Dance
(Residency for Grades K-12)
The music and dance traditions of central Java come alive as students learn essential techniques and structures and celebrate their new skills in a culminating performance.

Play the Gamelan
(Workshop for Grades K-12)
After learning basic techniques and musical forms, students play a piece as part of a gamelan ensemble. Joko transforms any group into collaborative musicians, developing skills that are valuable in music training and in the classroom. Note: available only in combination with performance.

Wayang Kulit - Shadow Puppets of Java
(Workshop for Grades K-8)
This Javanese art form encourages storytelling. Intricately carved and painted, puppets cast stylized shadows of heroes and demons while students develop characters and create their own scenes.
