Biography
Tri Sutrisno, has danced and taught in Indonesia, New Zealand, and Minnesota. Born in Surakarta, Java, she began learning dance at the age of seven. A specialist in the dances of Indonesia, she has led classes, school residencies and workshops for adults and children. In Minnesota she has danced for various cultural events and has created a corps of dancers to perform with the Sumunar Gamelan Ensemble. Currently Tri serves as the Dance Director for Indonesian Performing Arts Assocation of Minnesota. Tri has also given workshops and master classes at colleges and universities across Minnesota, including Hamline University, Macalaster College, St. Olaf College, Carlton College, St. Cloud State University, Winona State University, as well as Radford College in Virginia. Tri has garnered distinction for her work in the Gamelan tradition. Her formal training began in the court of Java as a student of Bapak Mulyono, Dance Master in the court of Java, STSI (Collage of Performing Arts). Later, she was bestowed a degree in Indonesian Traditional Dance by the Intermediate School Teachers College, Surakarta Central Java. Tri has choreographed, taught and danced traditional dance in Indonesia, New Zealand and Minnesota. Captured on film and stage, Tri has blended her sense of Gamelan tradition with several other dancer/choreographers hailing from Asia, South America and North America. Always mindful of the need to maintain classical tradition, Tri has developed a strong foundation of dance performance that is based on the aesthetic and philosophical ideas of classical and traditional dance. Choreography Tri Sutrisno is also a choreographer of new and traditional dances. Her works include Batik, Dance Drama Jaka Tarub (folktale), Bird, Ratnasari, Kelinci, Peksi and Roro Ngigel.
